Cookies

There is no cookie banner on this site because there is nothing to consent to. We set one cookie, it is strictly necessary, and it only exists once you have signed in. Everything a customer does, from finding out what the council will take to checking a quote, works with cookies blocked.
The one cookie
| Name | Set when | Purpose | Lifetime |
|---|---|---|---|
| hmd_session | You sign in with a one-time email link | Keeps you signed in to the company portal or the your-data page between requests | 30 days, or until you sign out or delete your data |
It is marked HttpOnly, so scripts in the page cannot read it; Secure, so it is only sent over HTTPS; and SameSite=Lax, so other sites cannot make your browser send it with their requests. It holds a signed token, not your email address in the clear, and it is checked against your account on every request. It is strictly necessary for the thing you asked for, signing in, so no consent is required for it under the ePrivacy rules or their successors.
Browser storage
We do not use local storage, session storage or any other browser storage. Your postal code and the item you chose travel in the page address, which is why you can bookmark or share a results page, and nothing is written to your device.
What we do not set
- No advertising or retargeting cookies.
- No third-party analytics cookies and no analytics script from another company. Our analytics are first party and recorded on the server, and anything that looks like an email, phone number, full postal code or street address is stripped before an event is written.
- No social embeds, no embedded videos and no fonts loaded from another company, which are the usual ways trackers get onto a site without anyone deciding to add one. The page security policy only allows connections back to this site, so a third-party tracker could not load even if one were added by mistake.
- No tracking pixels in our emails, so we do not know whether you opened one.
How to control it
Signing out clears it. Clearing cookies for this site in your browser has the same effect and nothing else changes: browsing disposal options with cookies blocked entirely works exactly the same. If you delete your data from the your data page, the cookie is cleared as part of that and your account no longer exists for it to point at.
The three country sites, .com, .ca and .co.uk, each set their own copy of this cookie for their own domain. Signing in on one does not sign you in on another.
